Brent Stirton is a photojournalist and he has won many awards. I was looking through his website and every one of his images is strong. The way he frames his subjects is really captivating. I chose these two pictures, because I loved the vantage point in which they were taken. You really get a feel of movement and scale in these images, as well as an understanding of how these people live their lives. His use of color and composition is also very important. The sky in these is gorgeous!

Binge Britain

For the past four years, Maciej Dakowicz has been photographing night street life in Cardiff, Wales. These images are so raw and honest, I’m surprised that he could get so close without getting involved in some of the mayhem. I don’t think that he had any intent to portray the street in a bad way. Instead, it seems he was only documenting what was going on. The light in these images is bright and harsh, and they way he framed has really in-your-face quality. He said that he’s traveled 20 countries and he had never seen anything like this.

I love the lonely feeling both of these images evoke.
I want to know this mans story and find out more about him…
The light emitted from the window that is falling onto the bed in the first photograph is beautiful.
I chose the second as well because I find the crop and position of this man an interesting choice.

I found these 2 images when searching through some undiscovered photographers. I’m very interested in the undiscovered talent of the world because I feel like they just haven’t gotten their big break yet, but they still have a lot of talent. I feel like these 2 images are very strong. The crop on the animals makes for a beautiful image. I know we always talk about “no pet pictures!” but these don’t look anything like pet pictures. the time of day and location also makes for very intense, beautiful images.

I found this image from the unknown photography section of Flickr. The only artist information I found on this particular image was the the artist signed he/she’s name as [SpooN]. I absolutely love the colors in this image. I’m going to have to guess that the photographer achieved these color through photoshop, but I cannot be sure. Although this image is somewhat simple, it simplicity is what makes it interesting. I love silhouetting and this is a beautiful example of how, through silhouetting , and simple object can be turned into an object that you can’t take your eyes off of.

Piss Christ

This incredibly controversial image is by American photographer Andres Serrano. Serrano took a small plastic crucifix and submerged it in his own urine. Naturally, this upset the church and most Christians seeing as it is a blatant slap in the face, and a grave disrespect to the Christian faith. However, it cannot be denied, this is a beautiful image. The lighting, the color palette, there even seems to be emotion in it. If one did not know the figure was sitting in urine, it would almost seem like Serrano was attempting to glorify the crucifix. And maybe that was his intent? Either way, it is a great image to strike up a debate about. There is so much to talk about with an image like this- the intention, the reaction, the consequences, taking something so beloved and so revered by some people and pair it with something that is considered grotesque and unsanitary; it creates a difficult juxtaposition.

Serrano has continued on to make controversial and somewhat awkward images including a series entitled “Shit” and “A History of Sex”

Elliott Ewritt

Elliott Ewritt is an incredible photographer. He has done portraits of people as famous as JFK, and shot for many fashion magazines, but the work that he does that I admire most is a series of his called Phototoons. He has an amazing ability to capture humor on film. Humor, I believe is one of the most difficult things to capture. But for Ewritt, through ironic juxtapositions and careful framing, creates images that are so successful. He has a trained eye, to look for such things. It is a knack that not everyone has. But nonetheless I greatly appreciate his photographs. Photography does not always have to be so serious. One can have a lot of fun with it, as they should!

Bobby Neel Adams

So I’m counting on this guys work amazing you just as it did me.
Adams’ work consists of combination’s.
The sections on his page I found most engaging are entitled Family Tree, Couples, and Age Map.
First, in Family Tree, he takes individual portraits of family members, sizes and prints them to the same proportions,
then manually tears and glues them together –
so keep in mind: no Photoshop (as he says on the site). !!

Steve McCurry

Steve McCurry is a really famous photojournalist photographer, who is most known for his work for National Geographic. Yes, he is the one who took the iconic Afghan Girl. I love his photography for many reasons. I love the highly saturated colors in his images which really serve to convey the place of the photograph. The facial expressions and gestures of his subjects are also extremely important in his images, as you can tell from each of these. These are key to telling the visual story of these people, which is why the Afghan Girl portrait became so iconic. You can get great understanding of her story without reading a word.

Jay Kinghorn

This photographer, Jay Kinghorn, came to lecture here at RIT in the fall. He is considered a “Photoshop master” and I find his photographs to be extraordinary. But knowing that he can do anything within Photoshop, it makes me think that his photos aren’t as amazing before he manipulates them. The photo of the bison took a while to figure out what it was, but once I did, it is absolutely beautiful. It looks like it is looking right into my eyes. Usually I consider bison to be large and kind of dangerous, but this photo makes him look very docile and vulnerable with the snow on it’s face and even with it staring into the camera. I love the different ways he uses motion in some of his pictures. His black and white pictures are fantastic but the way he uses color is very impressive and equally as good. I’m still curious as to how much he does in photoshop for that though.
